Deputy Web Editor Andrea Valdez, a Houstonian, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and received her MSJ from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Two days after graduating from Medill, she began working at Texas Monthly as a fact checker. In addition to dutifully guarding the magazine’s integrity, she wrote The Manual, reporting on topics ranging from how to buy a custom cowboy hat to the proper technique for riding a bull—an activity she does not recommend.

Senior Editor Jason Cohen has written for Texas Monthly since 1995 (and texasmonthly.com since its very first iteration). His February 1997 story “The Ice Bats Cometh,” about minor league hockey in Texas, was the basis of his book Zamboni Rodeo (Greystone Press, 2001). He is also the co-author of Generation Ecch! (Fireside Books, 1994) and co-editor of SXSW Scrapbook (Essex/University of Texas Press, 2011). He is an award-winning writer for such publications as Rolling Stone, SPIN, Details, the Austin Chronicle, the Austin American-Statesman, Portland Monthly, and Cincinnati Magazine. He has also been a blogger since 2002 and has been known to maintain as many as five Twitter accounts.

Associate Editor Sonia Smith, a native of Houston, is a graduate of Georgetown University. She has reported on convict cowboys at the Angola Prison Rodeo, celebrity magazines in Moscow, and aerial hog hunting in Knox City, Texas. She has also written for Slate Magazine, the Associated Press, the Baton Rouge Advocate, the Kyiv Post, and the Dallas Morning News and was a finalist for the 2008 Livingston Awards for Young Journalists. Her great-great-grandfather was a Texas Ranger in Kerr County in the 1870s.
